Mathew Hill – My time in Medicine Hat with Mad Hatter Roastery

The first week-end of November I traveled to Medicine Hat, fondly termed “The Hat” by locals and visitors alike, to participate in the 2nd annual Coffee Week-end sponsonred by Madhatter Coffee Roastery.  Kathryn Tatham, Madhatter Coffee Roastery owner and head roaster, had me out the previous year for the first Coffee Week-End and invited me back for this year’s event.

Over the course of the week-end, I presented 3 times to 3 different groups; once to chefs and restaurant owners, another to coffee drinkers interested in learning more about coffee, and finally to the staff at a local cafe.

Each presentation included a brief introduction into what coffee is and how history has served as the backdrop to its becoming the most consumed beverage world-wide.  And, of course, each presentation included coffee cupping.  At De Vine Restaurant, we even got to taste dessert cookies from a local baker and pair them them with coffees we were cupping to discuss which coffee best complemented each cookie.  Much like wine-pairing with meals, pairing coffee with desserts can not only help to find the right coffee for a special dessert, but also help to bring out and highlight each coffees’ distinctive cup notes and  flavor characteristics.  Mmmmhhhmmm, cookies and coffee!

And more cupping and tasting….

Cupping coffees and tasting cookies is hard work!

Hopefully the Week-End of Coffee will be repeated next year.  To find out more about coffee in Medicine Hat, contact Kat Tatham at Madhatter Coffee Roastery – 403.529.2344.
